Charles Peterson, born in Lettland, worked as a pipe maker in the Meerschaum manufactory of Friedrich Kapp. After emigrating from Nuremberg, Germany he opened a tobacco boutique in Dublin's Grafton Street.

In 1890 Charles Peterson invented the Peterson Patented System, which brought world renown to the Irish manufacturer, later called Kapp & Peterson. The pipe bowl has an additional chamber. This reservoir absorbs moisture and condensate, and the smoke is whirled around, at the same time cooling it down.

The second patent that made Peterson famous was the Peterson Lip (PL). The smoke gets channelled into the throat, going easy on sensitive tongues.
