In the last two years, Peterson has produced several series with extremely deep rustication. The surface looks rugged but feels surprisingly pleasant in hand. This dramatically increases the surface area – perfect for smokers who tend to overheat their pipes.
Still, wood is wood, and no matter how hard it is, it can burn if pushed beyond its limits. So be careful and check the tobacco chamber from time to time. The area just above the draught hole is the most stressed – and where most burnouts occur.
Why? Because the ember is naturally drawn toward the draught hole. If you puff too hard, it gets even hotter – hot enough to challenge even the toughest briar. Small cracks can be repaired by an expert, but if ignored, they soon turn into holes. And no, we don’t get replacements for burnouts in this area, which often leads to long discussions: “I’ve got 30 pipes, been smoking for 30 years, and this has never happened before!”
Alright, we drifted off a bit – that was more of a smoking manual than a product description.
Back to the point: besides the striking rustication, the Derry series features a beautiful caramel-white acrylic stem that perfectly complements the light two-tone finish of the bowl. And yes – even if it looks delicious, don’t bite it!
